A new study just released at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference concludes that there could be some very negative consequences associated with artificial sugar substitutes, including aspartame. One of the major risks is a much higher risk of strokes. Researchers concluded, “This study suggests that diet soda is not an optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages, and may be associated with a greater risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, or vascular death than regular soda.”There is plenty of evidence showing that aspartame can be dangerous to your health. Over 75% of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA are linked to aspartame! Some of the more serious long-term reactions following aspartame ingestion include migraines and headaches, nausea, fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety attacks, depression, and asthma or chest tightness.
Past studies have also linked aspartame consumption to other problems such as epilepsy and seizures, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, memory loss and Alzheimer’s, various cancers and premature birth and birth defects in infants. Some studies have revealed that the daily intake of artificially sweetened soft drinks may increase the risk of preterm delivery by as much as 78%.
Aspartame is a combination of phenylalanine and aspartic acid, both of which are harmless amino acids found in most of the protein foods we eat. However, when the ester bond linkage of these two amino acids is broken down by the body, methanol (aka wood alcohol which is poison) is one of the byproducts. When aspartame is metabolized by the body, the chemical diketopiperazine (DKP) is also created. DKP has been implicated in the occurrence of brain tumors.
When phenylalanine and aspartic acid are consumed as free amino acids, and not part of a naturally occurring food, they enter the central nervous system in abnormally high concentrations. These high concentrations cause excessive firing of the brain’s neurons. This condition has been termed “excitotoxicity” by Dr. Russell Blaylock, a prominent neurosurgeon. It can lead to cell death and can trigger the symptoms listed above.
Are Your Symptoms Linked to Aspartame? Most people don’t make the connection between aspartame ingestion and their physical symptoms. They spend countless amounts of money and time chasing their symptoms with no positive result. They often resort to over-the-counter or prescription drugs to combat their symptoms. These drugs bring their own set of symptoms to the problem.
Here is something you can try to detect if your symptoms are linked to artificial sweetener ingestion.
There are plenty of alternatives to drinking diet soda. There is no substitute for a good glass of water! Other choices include herbal teas, (sweetened with agave or honey), and fruit and/or vegetable juices. Hydrating your body is a vital part of our physiology, but poisoning your body with artificially sweetened beverages is just plain self-destructive.
